Artist Statement - 2/13/03

My art is a vehicle through which I challenge perceptions of society and
our relationship to the environment. My recent work consists primarily
of artists' books, sound and video that critique historical and
current situations. These topics range from colonization and the
introduction of species to narratives where images of buildings
worldwide are subjected to similar terrible fates. I use mixed media to
create narratives and artificial scenarios that comment on social ills.
My intent is to use visual art to provoke viewers to recall personal
memories and examine larger scale situations of environmental or social
significance. The integration of self-written text with imagery allows
for complex issues, such as colonialism and the resulting introduction
of disease, to be addressed.
Visually, I explore textures that suggest history and links to specific
moments in the past. Some of these textures allude to decaying matter as
a result of disease introduced by exploration and subjugation. These
surfaces are evocative of the past yet they hint at possible future
scenarios. Imagery and text together combine commonplace elements, such
as trees and buildings, in ways that challenge the viewer to see
differently.
